THE BIBLE – DISCOVERY YEAR 07 WITH LUKE’S GOSPEL
COMMENT FOR PENTECOST 2- 10-06-07
1 Kings 17: 8-24
This is a crucial event in Elijah’s struggle against the local tribal worship supported by Queen Jezebel. As a dreadful drought proceeds, Elijah, in fear for his life, finds support from a Canaanite woman. Such is the spiritual power in the prophet/s life that this foreign woman and her son become part of the Hebrew people’s faith story.
Psalm 146
This is a song of praise to the spiritual power of the creator God who sustains and guides the whole creation. The creative Spirit has special care for those hurt and disadvantaged by fallible human leadership. Consider the creative programs today to assist those hurt in our competitive, conflict-ridden society. So Praise the Lord for every helpful action and person.
Galatians 1: 11-24
Paul is talking to people who, like him, once followed the Law of Moses. He tells them that God’s work of grace in his heart predates his learning the Law, and led him step by step into a deeper commitment to the Gospel. In our world with its messages of revenge and hate, Paul gives us a new message of forgiveness and new beginnings through God’s grace.
Luke 7: 11-17
The crowd with Jesus met funeral procession at the city gate. A young man was dead, and his mother, a widow, would now be destitute. All the loving spiritual energies of God were present in Jesus’ act of compassion which transformed that scene. Every age needs to update its response to death and deprivation using the great spiritual power of compassion.
