THE BIBLE- TODAY’S TREASURE HUNT
COMMENT FOR EPIPHANY 6 – 12-02-06
11 Kings 5: 1-14
The readings this week emphasise the spiritual quality in all good relationships.  Around 850 BCE a young Israeli girl is captured in a cross border raid by the Assyrian army.  Working in his household she is worried about the army commander’s leprosy.  He trusts her loving concern and finds healing in an act of humility through the ministry of the Israelite, Elisha, holy man of God.
Psalm 30
This psalm is used at the Feast of Dedication (John 10: 21-22) and celebrates a person’s recovery from a life threatening illness; also the restoration of the Temple in 165 BCE after its desecration during the Greek occupation. “After a night of weeping, joy came in the morning”.
I Corinthians 9: 24-27
Paul is fascinated with the way competitors trained for the Isthmian Games.  As an Apostle he sees himself as both athlete and coach. But, in striving for spiritual fitness, everyone gets the prize of new life in God. “With love to the World Vol 11, No.5, 06-02-06)
Mark 1: 40-45
Mark sees Jesus as the expression of God’s inclusive love for every person, sick or well, community member or outcast. Lepers were outcasts who found what shelter they could.  They had to shout “unclean” to anyone who came near. (Leviticus 13)  Jesus broke that code and touched the poor man.  What are the codes which Christians today in Jesus name are called on to break?
