THE BIBLE - TODAY’S TREASURE HUNT
COMMENT FOR TRINITY SUNDAY – 11-06-06
Isaiah 6: 1-8
With the death of King Uzziah about 742 BCE, there came the end of stable government for Judah while the northern kingdom of Israel was threatened by Assyria. But Isaiah knows a sacred place – the temple- a place of safety and inspiration. Here human hopes are purified in the presence of the awe-inspiring holiness of God.
Psalm 29
This psalm echoes the Isaiah reading where heavenly beings are in awe of the power of Israel’s God. Turbulent times for the nation are small compared with the turbulence of the natural world. But it is the voice of the Lord, like the Divine Word, that corrects and calms the unpredictability of the storm. When all is done for the worshipper there is the prayer “May the Lord bless His people with peace.”
Romans 8: 12-17
This small passage goes to the heart of Paul’s message- that God was in the life of Jesus as he lived among us. But now it is the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit that is present in the congregation at worship and in the light of the individual. The gift of God is a certainty that we belong within the family of God.
John 3: 1-17
Nicodemus was a member of the Sanhedrin – the Council of 70 Jewish elders advising the Roman government on matters of Jewish law. It was not easy for him to believe that God should come in Christ with a gift of love so that people could live a truly spiritual life. It was as if they were being born into a new family as a child of God. We might reflect on how much we depend on the imagery of the family in our concept of God at work in His world.
