THE BIBLE – DISCOVERY YEAR O7 WITH LUKE’S GOSPEL
COMMENT FOR LENT 3 --- 11-03-07
Isaiah 55: 1-9
The prophet is speaking to hardworking exiles in Babylon, but he could easily be speaking to people today. In this beautiful poetry he is asking people to think about what they really need. He senses a hunger in the human spirit, and appeals to them to seek the spiritual power which motivated, directed and sustained them in their spiritual journey as a nation.
Psalm 63: 1-8
The writer has found that the spiritual hunger of his life is met in the mystery of worship in the sanctuary. In his meditation such a quiet settles on his mind that the peace lasts even in the normally anxious night watches. This builds a new understanding of his own being- his thinking and his living. His life becomes an echo of God.
l Corinthians 10: 1-13
In this letter Paul asks the congregation to reflect on the spiritual power of God in the great events – God’s actions- in their history. then they might see in the great actions encountered in their faithful worship, the spiritually nourishing presence of God. It is the mystery and the hope in that presence which meets the needs of our human condition.
Luke 13: 1-9
There are elements in this reading which reflect some negative aspects in our world with its complexity, change, threatened violence, uncertain justice and suffering. Think of the angry politics deep in the first story; the “who is to blame” of the second; and the impatience of the third. Once again Jesus will go his way, offering in each present moment God’s love with all its free grace and forgiveness. Among the subtle messages of each story the third raises the question of how long does the grace of God remain on offer?
