THE BIBLE – DISCOVERY YEAR O7 -
WITH LUKE’S GOSPEL
Comment for Easter 6 --- 13-05-07
Revelation 21: 10, 22, 22: 5
The exaltation of this vision is a part of a message of hope – trust in the ultimate triumph of God. It is a resurrection message. Any advantage that evil has with its brutality and hate is only temporary. The creative power that brought this whole world into existence and daily sustains it is spiritual, and all things crude and cruel will be brushed aside.
There will even be a New Jerusalem radiating light and peace.
Psalm 67
We can imagine this being a popular harvest Psalm as it calls on people, and nations also, to be grateful for God’s sustaining blessing. God is saving and guiding people and nations. However the response in verses 3 and 5 comes from a foundational story of the Hebrew people. This brings a recognition that the life of their country and that of the neighbouring nations are all under the good providence of God.
Acts 16: 9-15
Paul has been walking for weeks with his heightened spiritual sensitivity directing his steps. At Troas, does he consult Dr.Luke? Imagine the conversation if Luke is that “man from Macedonia”! Now, the Acts narrative continues in the first person pronoun. At Philippi there was no Synagogue, as ten Jewish men were needed (With Love to the World 15-05-04, page 57) But outside the gate mostly women, Jewish and Gentile, were the first to hear the good news of the Gospel.
John 14: 23-29
After the resurrection and waiting for Pentecost, the disciples would go over this conversation again and again. How was the best they ever believed about God to be confirmed? How would it feel for Jesus to be in their minds rather than sitting opposite them? How would they be alive with a new spiritual power that they still could not understand while they waited? Finally, how would they know deep in their day to day lives that they would have the kind of peace they recognised in the life of Jesus?
