THE BIBLE – TODAY’S TREASURE HUNT
COMMENT FOR EASTER 6   21-05-06
1 John 5: 1-6
John is building on that great Hebrew conviction that the spiritual power of God is moving history along, and that Jesus embodies what God intends for all humanity.  It is a life of loving, costly, transforming service.  To believe in this Jesus is to commit ourselves to a life of loving obedience to him and his spirit.
Psalm 98
This great Psalm begins by reflecting on the first fifteen hundred years of Hebrew covenant history.  Now “the whole earth – nature and humanity – joins together like a cosmic orchestra in a great symphony of praise to God” (WLW – 21-05-06, p 63)
Old boundaries go as we learn to sing a new song enchanted with the beauty of God’s creative love.
Acts 10: 44-48
We should read also the ten previous verses where Peter is talking to the Officer in Charge of Roman Military Forces in Palestine, and his friends.  We can just hear the spiritual power coming through Peter’s words as he tells the story of Jesus. Then to the amazement of the good Hebrew disciples these sophisticated Romans could not contain their excitement, and joined in praise to the resurrected Jesus.
John 15: 9-17
This passage is about the incredible spiritual strength of the love of God.  Here it is like the glue which holds together this vital living created world.  There is competition, difference and disagreement. But what holds it all together is the love, forgiveness, compassion, generosity and hospitality which we learn from the loving power of God. (WLW – 15-05-06 p 60).  The church is charged with the task of so living this life of love that it shows the way.
