COMMENT FOR PENTECOST 16—24-09-06
Proverbs 31: 10-31
The deep hurt of the exile experience comes out strongly in the Old Testament story. A healing touch is needed, and comes from Lady Wisdom who appears as the Spirit of God. It is her mysterious, spiritual energy that has the world of her home, the sacred places, the market and the community living in productive harmony. But in true O.T. thinking her husband gets the honours. (v.23)
Psalm 1
This Wisdom Song reads like the speech of the headmaster at the BoysSchool. There are words of blessing, encouragement and promise, and an appeal to the boys to use their intelligence and understand the Law of the Lord. The alternative is to live outside God’s plan and have their useless lives discarded as rubbish.
James 3: 13-4:3, 7-8a
James wants people to think about the Pentecost experience so that the spirit of God will really show in their daily lives. He gives a wonderful list of the spiritual gifts God offers. But In our competitive, cruel and conflict ridden world, remember that God’s gift is peace if we but have the wisdom to seek it.
Mark 9: 30-37
Mark explains how Jesus made a second attempt to explain his impending death. The disciples cannot grasp the idea of God being a willing victim, Who then rises from death through the Eternal Spiritual Power which is in this world as the gift of His Grace to the human race. We have some sympathy for the disciples. How much of the Easter experience can we risk in our everyday personal and community lives.?
