THE BIBLE – TODAY’S TREASURE HUNT
COMMENT FOR EASTER 7 -   28-05-06
1 John 5 : 9-13
John is responding to people’s questions – was Jesus truly human or God in human disguise? But John prefers to see in the three year ministry of Jesus a quality of living so spiritual, so divine as well as human, that his life is the unique gift of God to the human race.  He says “God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son”.
Psalm 93
This is the psalm for Ascension.  In the Old Testament, waters at sea and in flood symbolize turmoil and death like the original chaotic state when the Creator God brought order and made life possible.  Now the Ascension brings to the story of Jesus.  after conflict and death, the new life of the one eternal spiritual Power we call God.
Acts 1: 15-17; 21-26
The eleven disciples, or a total of 120 believers under Peter’s leadership move to replace Judas and elect another disciple. Two qualified as witnesses of all the events of the ministry of Jesus.  The disciples thought and prayed for the guidance of God, then cast lots, and Matthias was chosen.  After Pentecost we will not hear again of casting lots, the Holy Spirit will now be making the choice.
John 17: 6-19
Over John’s long life we can imagine him thinking of this prayer of Jesus.  It is intense and thoughtful and needs quiet, slow reading.  He calls God “Holy father”, the only time this occurs in the New Testament.  “Jesus is perhaps asking that his disciples (and we) may know the fullness of God, both as awesome creator and as intimate, alongside- us friend.” (WLW 22-05-06, PAGE 10)
