TENSE MOMENTS IN CHURCH/STATE RELATIONS   NO.6

  1. Paul’s mission around the Greek and Roman world took him first to the Synagogue in each town they visited.  Here they would tell the Jesus story.  Some would accept  it along with any Gentile supporters (see T.M. No.3) leaving the Synagogue much depleted in numbers.

  2. In any resulting civil disturbance the Christians were brought before the Magistrates and charged with insurrection.  A report of the incident would find its way to Rome.

  3. Back in Jerusalem Paul was being beaten when rescued by Roman soldiers.  When  about to be flogged during interrogation he claimed his Roman citizenship.  For his own safety he was escorted by night to Caesarea.  Before the Governor he made  his appeal to the Emperor, which was accepted. (See Acts of the Apostles 21:27 to 26:32)

  4. Paul could see trouble ahead for the Jesus people.  Governments – any  administration -  wanted loyalty, unity and obedience. But the people who follow the way of Jesus travel a higher road of justice and love  in pursuit of spiritual peace.
