WHAT IS CHRISTIAN MEDITATION?
The new paradigm (for religion) is based on the idea of the interior journey, and the story at the heart of the new paradigm is that God or spirit is an inward experience…

The founder of Christian Meditation was an Irish Catholic priest named John Main (1926-82).  He was taught by an Indian Swani Satyananda in the 1950’s while working in Malaysia.  From that time daily meditation became the foundation of his spiritual life.  However, in 1958 he was told by his novice master to give it up and he dutifully returned to a routine of mental and vocal prayer.

Over the coming years John Main came to realise that there was a tradition of meditation using mantra like repetition of words and phrases in the Christian faith which had largely been forgotten.

John Main thus began to meditate again.  He delved deeply into his Christian tradition and soon found that it met the need of many people for a deeper experience of prayer.

In 1975 assisted by Laurence Freeman OSB he established the first Christian Meditation Centre in London.

Laurence Freeman succeeded John Main on his death in 1982.  In 1991 the World Community for Christian Meditation was formed.

There are now Christian Meditation groups in over sixty countries and over 200 groups in Australia.
